The government, without application of its mind, has notified the yet-to-be-formed State unit of Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF) as a banned organisation, president of the front Varavara Rao said and demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification.

Letter from DGP

The seven-year-old RDF is a democratic organisation and has been active across India. In fact, it was allowed to stage a protest on the Parliament Street in New Delhi on July 31 and even submit a memorandum to the President, he told media here on Saturday.

It is ridiculous on part of the State government to react to a letter from the Director General of Police and issue a notification banning the organisation without verifying the facts, he added.

Further, the State-unit of the organisation is yet to be constituted, Mr. Varavara Rao said. The only association with the State is that both the president and vice-president of the RDF were from AP, he added. In April, the first national conference of the RDF was held in Hyderabad where he joined it and was elected national president and Prasada Rao was elected vice-president, he explained.

Ban continued

Including RDF in the notification continuing the ban on CPI (Maoist) and other mass-based organisations for one more year under AP Public Security Act 1992 is undemocratic and an attack on the Constitution, RDF general secretary Raj Kishore said. The RDF has limited itself to organising meetings in protest against violation of constitutional rights, he added.

It is unfortunate that the Governments are continuing to use outdated oppressive colonial laws to suppress the democratic rights of the people, Mr. Raj Kishore said.
